Kids Martial Arts near Colorado Springs

Class Descriptions - Here's how to find out what each class is like.

Adults - All Levels

All belts are welcome to train during this class. We recommend that white belts with 2 stripes or less first train in the White Belts Only class to learn the basics. This class begins with a warm-up, afterwhich the Professor will show and explain new positions and techniques. Students will pair up and drill the technique, practicing together. At the end of this class, all students will spar. Brand new white belts will continue to practice the class techniques while observing others during sparring until they are ready to spar.

Adults - White Belts Only

This class is the best class and the safest place for novice Jiu-Jitsu practitioners to start; forget about the old days of starting as a white belt by just jumping into an All Levels class. That was when new white belts just struggled to survive the smashing while trying their best to avoid injury. At The HQ, the White Belts Only class is a controlled environment where students are closely observed and the level is appropriate for EVERYONE regardless of background, age, fitness level, or experience.

This class is even beneficial for higher level belts who are also welcome to attend, understanding that the class level will always be kept at a white belt level. As usual, class begins with specific warm-up drills that are unique to our school. These warm-up exercises enhance the student's flexibility, mobility, and mind-body connection while preparing the body for Jiu-Jitsu movements since, most times, students are not used to these particular movements.

Once students are properly warmed up, Professor will demonstrate a technique and break it down so that everyone understands. These techniques include all fundamentals of Jiu-Jitsu such as maintaining a good base, breaking grips, breaking out of guard, escaping mount, taking the back, basic sweeps, throws, takedowns, and guard passing. And of course, students will learn arm bars, triangles, omoplatas, kimuras, chokes, and many other fundamental techniques.

During this class, Professor moves around actively correcting each pair of students as they practice new skills. As students progress, Professor will teach them to begin sparring by first training from one position only (situational training), and then advancing to full sparring when they're ready.

Adults - Competition Class

Students who intend to compete will train at a competition pace during this class. They will also learn more details about scoring, competition strategy, and rules. This is the perfect class for competitors to push their limits while receiving feedback on their sparring performance from Professor. It's also the place for students who have not yet competed to fine-tune their skills before competing for the first time.

Adults - Open Mat

Open mats are training sessions without official instruction. There will always be a black belt observing at Open Mat, however he will be rolling (sparring) with different students instead of conducting class. During this time, students will spar as they wish and/or use the mat space for practicing techniques and drilling. Open Mats are times that are open and free to Jiu-Jitsu students from any school or team which allows The HQ students to train with new training partners and test their skills.

Adults - Endurance, Drilling

Consists of high-paced guard passing and take down drilling. This session includes an instructional period for the technique of the day. Then, at the end, the class provides students with extended situational drilling based off of the technique of the day. The class teaches students to become comfortable in uncomfortable situations.

Kids - Beginners

The kids beginners class is where most 5 to 8 year olds will begin training. Older kids may still want to start in the kids beginners class to gain some confidence before jumping into the intermediate group. This class teaches kids Jiu-Jitsu and self-defense basics while working with them on the following skills: listening, focus, following directions, respect and self-control, mental toughness, sportsmanship, and discipline.

While these young warriors are learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and other llife skills, they will also be improving their fitness, flexibility, strength, coordination, and athleticism.

Kids - Intermediate

The kids intermediate class is where most 9 -12 year olds will train. Students in this age group who are brand new may want to start in the kids beginners class to gain some confidence and learn some basic movements before they start in the intermediate group. To train in the intermediate program, the students must first be succeeding at the following skills: listening, focus, following directions, respect and self-control, mental toughness, sportsmanship, and discipline.

The intermediate group trains at a tougher and faster pace than the beginner group; students will drill the positions and techniques repetitively and spar more intensly. In this class, kids will learn more complex Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques and be able to demonstrate a wide variety of knowledge.
